Has Anybody Else Washed their Kid's Cellphone Accidentally in the Wash? ....

Aug 20, 2008 11:06AM - 11 comments

Don't Ask ... Yes, it went thru the wash but luckily we have insurance on the phone.  I felt it go "plop" as I put in my son's laundry and I felt around and felt nothing so I did the wash last night before bed.  This morning .. well, need I say more ..... there it was on the bottom of the washing machine basin ...... dead as dead could be.  My jaw dropped to the floor.  How could I have done this?!!!!

My son did not ask me to do his laundry, nor did he leave it for laundry .. I was being nice and just did the wash ... so I guess my fault this go-around LOL!  He is almost 10 and actually I am proud to say he usually does his own laundry and this was my treat gone bad.

For those wondering, he paid for a year's worth of insurance up front and put $ into the phone .. he has older siblings so has a need to be carrying a phone as once he got lost in a Six Flags Theme Park w/o a phone .. things changed fast after that.  After 2yrs of prepaid mins last mo. we added him to our family share plan.

Well, they are at the Verizon store as I  speak and I am $50 out of pocket~!

Please share your cellphone story here ... make me feel better that I am not that stupid LOL!

Oh yeah! I think everyone's done something like this at one point or another. My son went on vacation in Hawaii and forgot his cellphone was in his pocket and waded into the ocean with it. Needless to say, it was ruined. He did take out the battery right away but we had to get him a new phone.
My daughter accidently dropped hers into a drainage ditch she was trying to cross and got it wet. We were able to save it because she quickly took the battery out and dried it out real good.
There's actually a website you can go to that will show you how to save a cell phone that's gone through the wash. That should show you plenty of people have done it, lol. Here it is if you want to look at it. Don't worry, you're not alone! :)

That Stinks!
years ago i dropped my phone in a bowl of milk left over from cereal.  It actually limped along for 2 more years, but the speaker was shot and i had to use the earphones constantly.
I lost several phones over the years. In shopping carts (twice), must have fallen out of the car when I opened the door (twice). Plus too many times to count I had to backtrack and was able to find the phone at a cashregister or in a shopping cart..the last time I used verizon ins. to get a new one, it was actually reconditioned and did not work well.  When we replaced our phones, I gathered up all the phones that still worked that we just replaced and dropped insurance. I just lost my phone last week, and I just activated one of the old phones.  It is saving us 20.00 mo. plus the $50.00 every time I lose one.  (We still have 3 more old phones on standby for me! )

I guess I need a phone implant!

I have heard that a lot of phones end up in the toilet!

ALL I have to say is:

Car went vroom vroom all over cell phone...and purse...and glasses!  Guess I was too focused on getting the stroller in the car, keeping the baby asleep, and getting home to cook dinner!

I'm with ngio64....I need the implant!

C--It was very nice of you to do something nice for your son!  :)  I'm sure at the very least he knew you had good intentions.  And bravo for teaching your 10 yr old how to do laundry!!!  :)  So many children don't learn that until it's too late!  :)

Well, I am at least smiling for the first time since I lost my phone last week.  A friend was helping me put siding on my garage and when he was ready to leave, he pulled his van up by the apple tree to take some apples with him.  Seeing there were only about 8 apples left, I believe I placed my phone on the top of the van while I reached to pick the higher apples.  My arms full of apples, I gave him 2 more and took 3 to my mom and I had 3 remaining.  Guess with something in my hands, I didn't realize I didn't have my phone.  Seems it must have rode on the van for a while and then flew off somewhere between here and his home 2 hours away.  Just made me sick.  Have walked my entire yard several times to no avail.  Am temporarily unemployed so getting another one is out of the question right now ... I do not have phone insurance.  Thanks to all for providing me with a little levity ... although I am sorry you each had such an experience.  (((Hugs))) Ranae

Our Siberian husky ate my son's cell phone.  For dessert, she ate the mouse for the computer - actually, she chewed it but didn't eat it.  Her way of saying, "Don't leave me alone"  = P

Hey, I have a trick that REALLY does work for wet phones. My son left his on the porch the rain all night one time. When we found it it wouldn't turn on. A couple of days later it came on but none of the buttons worked, so we assumed it gone forever & gave up. Last month I found it & tried again. Buttons still didn't work. I don't know why I thought of it, I'm sure I've read it somewhere, but I filled a bowl with rice, took the battery out, and left it in the bowl for a couple of days. IT WORKED! I've been using it since then, well, no problems at all. So if that happens again, take the battery out & stick it in a bowl of rice for a few.

I get so mad at my husband because he is always on that stupid computer (supposed to be a phone!!!), but the battery is always going dead, (duh, computer drain) and he never seems to answer it when I call and always has an excuse for why that is.  Funny thing though that he never seems to have a problem getting tons of phone calls at home.  I got so mad one day I threw it out in the driveway and smashed it all to hell.  Was well worth the 50 bucks.  He never does research on a phone he just gets the coolest toy he can find.  Even though there were two guys in the Verizon store b!itching about their phones batteries not holding a charge he got the same phone as those two guys anyway.
The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.

I did'nt lose a cell phone yet, but my 2 year old niece hid it away once and it was dead!  I searched our house for two weeks to no avail.  I finally broke down and bought a new one, and would'nt you know it, my husband found my phone jammed between my son's art desk and the wall 2 days later!  My old boss would go through phones like you would'nt believe, sometimes losing them in water, sometimes just plain losing them.  I think in one year he had about 7 phones.  I wonder if they make a disposable phone like the digital cameras,  it would be cheaper for him. LOL
