Our beautiful baby girl was diagnosed at an ER in Florida (while we were on vacation) with a UTI.  They put her on an antibiotic and told us to check with our Dr. when we arrived home.  After 10 days on antibiotics they tested her urine again for continued infection.  They found that she still had a UTI and sent us for an ultrasound to check for obstructions and reflux.  On July 10, 2008 the ultrasound was performed and they noted ureter thickening (often related to reflux) and also found a 2.4 x 1.1cm "multilocular cystic lesion" at the base of her bladder, on/near her left ovary.  Her ovary was not seen.  Our pediatrician sent us to a pediatric urologist for further examination of the reflux and a second ultrasound to see the mass clearer.  She was put on a low dose antibiotic for the reflux and UTI.  At the urologist he suggested a VCUG to confirm the suspicion of vesicoureteral reflux.  After the VCUG and ultrasound (July 22) the urologist said that she definitely had stage II reflux and that most of these the children will grow out of it.  But in the mean time we must keep her on a low dose antibiotic to reduce the chance of infection of the bladder and to protect her kidneys.  He stated that the mass near her ovary was still there and that he would not comment on it because he was unsure what/where it is.  He referred us to a pediatric surgeon based on the radiologist's recommendations.  The radiologist now said that it measured 3 x 1.4cm and he called it "multiseptated cystic lesion".  They are still unsure of the etiology and location.  The pediatric surgeon requested a CT done before the appointment.  CT is scheduled for July 31 and surgeon appointment August 18.  Right now we are just supposed to wait and see.  How does one wait this long knowing that something seems to be growing inside their child and the professionals can not tell us what it is and what to do about it?

I am so so sorry you are going through this.  It is so much harder when it is one of our children than it is when it's ourselves. You will get through this because you have to for your little girl.  You can always come to this forum for support and to voice your fears and share your concerns.  If there is a suspicion that there might be malignancy, please make sure that you have someone who specializes in cancer doing the surgery - I don't know if gyn/oncs operate on infants or not but at least inquire about that at your August appointment. Hopefully they will know more after the CT scan and will have a plan of action for you. Let us know how your visit goes. I have a granddaughter just a month younger than your little one and I know how this must be tearing you apart.  But you can and you will get through this for your daughter's sake. Wish I could give you a hug in person, Chris P
