Trying to Understand the "Big Picture"

Jul 11, 2008 02:05PM - 2 comments

My life right now seems surreal.  Lost mom on May 18th and then my brother who lived with her went into his tailspin on July 2nd.  My brother received a miracle and is alive, but has suffered small strokes, his kidneys aren't functioning and he has an internal bleed somewhere in his gi tract.  Now, my 2 other brothers and I have to make decisions about conservasorship, guardianship, and since this brother was the executor of my mother's estate, that as well.  We are discussing Nursing home options.  It is surreal, like a soap opera, gone bad.  While he did this to himself with not managing his diabetes, I still love him.  He is my brother!!!  But DAMN.

I just needed to vent.

Peace and love to all,

Karen

I had a friend who didn't seem to understand that he couldn't party with all of his friends in college like they could.  I had lost track of him, but saw him one day at the mall with his mom pushing him in a wheelchair and he was nearly blind.  They would not give him a transplant because he kept doing all of that to himself.  Luckily he pulled himself together got his diabetes back under control, got the transplant and his vision eventually came back.  It is not easy to watch someone do those things to themselves, but you cannot let it drag you down too.  You have been through enough.

Well, each day my brother is stronger.  (Mentally and physically)  He assured me that he didn't intend to have this happen to him and I believe his sincerity.  The kidney specialist is estimating 2 more weeks on dialysis.  I pray he's right as my brother doesn't have any insurance and this is a costly treatment.  Regardless, whatever he needs, he is my brother...  He was accepted today into the hospital's intensive inpatient rehab program.  While it is 5 times more than a rehab nursing center, he will be able to get both his dialysis for the 3 days per week plus have intensive therapy 7 days a week.  So, I thought it a better program.  At this point, what's another $10,000 over the cost of the nursing home if it means his therapy won't be postponed or disrupted.

Feeling hopeful and thankful.

Hugs,

Karen
