Pregnancy w/large right cyst, fluid around left ovary, excruciating pain, now edge bleed with old blood

by shellster66, Aug 16, 2008 11:01AM
My sister is 9wks pregnant w/ her 4th pregnancy. Had 1st healthy baby 4 yrs ago. 2 yrs ago she conceived and lost baby at 11 wks--no explanation and had D&C. Couldn't get pregnant--told to go to fertility dr after trying  for a year. In the meantime had an ovarian cyst that was missed upon examination which finally ruptured and made her sick--treated w/antibiotics. After the year was up and no pregnancy fertility dr. put on Clomid. This ultimately resulted in a chemical pregnancy which did not take--lost at 5 weeks.  Finally stopped taking Clomid and all fertility drugs. Several months later she became pregnant with current baby. At 5 weeks, had awful stabbing pain on right side. Couldn't stand up straight. Dr was leaving for vacation and told her just normal pregnancy pains. After 5 days of horrible pain saw another dr in practice and given ultrasound. Large ovarian cyst on right ovary--told needed for pregnancy and had to endure. the baby was in perfect location so not etopic pregnancy. More intolerable pain on right and now left side. Another ultrasound at wk 7 shows slight rupture of cyst and now lots of fluid surrounding left ovary.Baby still looks healthy. Dr. thinks Clomid made her body extra sensitive to hormones and probably scar tissue from previous D@C is why she feels so much pain. Lots of pain medication prescribed-vicodin and tylenol w/codeine--but she only takes it when she is almost screaming and crying from the pain as it makes her violently sick which causes great constriction of her abdomen. Excruciating pain by 8 weeks--another ultrasound shows same cyst/fluid but now placenta shows edge bleed w/old blood. Baby still active. Dr. tells her he thinks its nothing to be worried about, but she is scared and now is spotting  the old blood. Finally, went  to dr again because pain became excruciating. The Dr. told her he had never seen anyone like her with her symptoms, that she wasn't normal, and that he didn't have any answers except strict bed rest at least until 12 weeks--perhaps longer. There are lots of questions. what is an edge bleed? Could this be caused by the severe vomiting or is  this a sign of subchorionic hematoma? (I've been researching internet) Also, what about all of the fluid around left ovary? I understand  about the right  cyst as I have been told this does support the pregnancy, but it doesn't show signs of being absorbed and it makes no sense about the other fluid buildup. Could another etopic pregnancy have been missed? The father is a twin, and the mother was on a fertility drug previously, so even though there is one  baby in the right place there could be another somewhere else. All of these symptoms are very mysterious. Does anyone have any possible answers  or had similar experiences? I have never seen anyone suffer that amount of pain with a pregnancy. Thank you.

The edge bleed is also known as a placental hemorrhage. Mine too showed old blood and we ended up losing the baby at 13 weeks due to the hemorrhage. It's more than likely, not caused by vomiting - the subchorionic hematoma is the same as a placental hemorrhage and that is more than likely the cause. My doc. gave us a 50/50 chance with the hemorrhage.  If she has old blood in there, she will more than likely cramp and bleed as well as the doc. and the perinatologist both told me that the old blood has to expel from the body.  It should be brown though, NOT red.  I had both brown and red and knew that couldn't be a good sign. It was just a very small amount and then stopped for 3 weeks but we still lost the baby. I'm so sorry she is going through this.  I'd go to a different OB group and get another opinion.  If she is having this severe of pain, she needs to go to the ER.  Good luck.

Hi. I had a right side ovarian cyst the size of a golf ball while pregnant that doctors missed. I had pain on and off throughout the pregnancy. However one night, the pain was intolerable at 7 months and I had to be given drugs to control the pain. The cyst had lodged itself in an area that had to be removed surgically at 7 months pregnant because doctors were afraid that I could go into labor due to the body's excessive pain. The doctor made the correct decision. Although, it wasn't a csection, the doctors were able to remove the cyst with surgery through lower abdomen and remove the golf ball cyst lodged in my pelvis. The baby was fine and it looked like a csection when I woke up.. but nothing with my uterus or the baby was touched. I was able to recover in the OB ward. Everything was fine and two months later I delivered (vaginally). Today, my daughter is happy and healthy.. and 11 years old.
