Namaste,

Lithium affects the flow of sodium through nerve and muscle cells in the body. Sodium affects excitation or mania.

Lithium is used to treat the manic episodes of manic depression. Manic symptoms include hyperactivity, rushed speech, poor judgment, reduced need for sleep, aggression, and anger. It also helps to prevent or lessen the intensity of manic episodes.

It may take 1-3 weeks to fully feel the effects of the lithium.

Sometimes an anti-depressant is also prescribed with the lithium, but only under certain circumstances.

I'm surprised your doctor put you on Lithium, since many doctors now prescribe one of the other psychptropic medications to control bipolar disorder.

Regardless, I wish you the best of luck in controlling your symptoms.

Stay on top of your thryroid as lithium can destroy them  particularly your thyroid Get it tested and get it tested often( I sound like Wilford Brimly on the didabetes supply commercial) malfunctioning thyroids will often mimc bi polar symptoms and if it is the thryoid all the head meds in the world wont make a difference until the thryoid is adjusted.
I know you have been trying to get the right med mix so I hope this works out for you.Good Luck
Love Venora.
