root canal becomes an extraction

What started out to be a root canal turned into an extraction because of complications.  Is this a common occurence?  I was in the chair for 75 minutes, and it's a week today since this happened and I'm still taking medication for pain. How long does something like this usually last?

Unfortunately, sometimes what looks "salvagable" on an x-ray ends up not being a good tooth to keep.  I'm assuming that there was a large cavity on the tooth to begin with.  You don't honestly know if there's enough sound tooth structure when there's a large cavity because the cavity may be larger than it appears on the x-ray.  The x-ray is a two dimensional representation of a three dimensional object so things can be hidden.  When the dentist performed the root canal, he probably was able to better evaluate it and determine that the decay was too extensive to save the tooth.

As for the pain, if its progressively getting better, I would say that its a little bit longer than usual.  If the pain has been persistent, I would advise going back to your dentist.
