tooth pain

My 57 year old friend is experiencing tooth pain. He has trouble chewing, eating hot and cold things. The pain lasts for hours. He has tried otc aspirin and that is not helping.

He went to the dentist last week and had an xray taken. the dentist said that nothing unusual showed up. She tapped on his tooth and he was in severe pain. The neighbouring teeth are ok and do not experience pain.

He has a crown on this particular tooth.

What could be wrong?

If the tooth doesn't have a root canal done, it could be possible that there is a cavity underneath the crown which can't be seen on the x-ray.  If the pain is still persistent, it may be a good idea to remove the crown to see what's going on underneath or to do a root canal through the crown to alleviate the pain.
