tooth pain

by Natalie511, Jul 10, 2008 02:14PM
Hello. I had a few cavities filled about ten days ago and I am having some pain on my upper left tooth. My dentist told me because of the trauma (so close to the nerve) that I would be experiencing some discomfort and that it would be a hard area to floss now. I cannot chew on that side of my mouth at all and the pain is getting worse. I had no pain before I entered the dentist office and now am in a great deal of discomfort. Is this normal? Also, when I left she mentioned something about if the pain gets worse , that I may need a root canal. And when I called the dental assistant told me that denistry is somewhat of a 'guessing game' and that you just have to wait and see. I am taking up to 4 Ibprofen a day , which helps, but today the pain is by far the worst. Any advice? Thank you so much.

I would advise you to go back to your dentist and inform him of your pain.  If the cavity was fairly deep, it isn't unusual to have pain or sensitivity after dental work.  But if the pain does not subside, it can be indicative of the need for a root canal.
