Gallbladder not visable on a HIDA scan!

by Kimmyjo425, Jul 08, 2008 06:50PM
In January I had a CT that stated that I had portal edema (vein from liver to gallbladder is either swelled shut or there is a blockage.) My PCP never did anything, although I was having severe chest pain, upper back pain, shoulder pain, and diarrhea after every meal. So, needless to say I switched doctors. My new PCP ordered an ultrasound of my gallbladder, pancreas, and liver. The tech was unable to see my gallbladder, and stated it was as if I hadnt fasted. Although I had, for the last 13 hrs. The radiologists report came back and stated the same thing and also stated it appeared that maybe my gallbladder was very contracted. So, my PCP sent me yesterday to have a HIDA Scan. After injecting me with the radioactive dye, and taking pictures for a hour, my gallbladder still did not show up. Therefore they would not inject me with the CCK. I am very worried about this "blockage". What could it be? And since I have had this for going on 6 months, is it a possibility it could damage my liver. I also have Protein S deficiency - Thrombophilia, but not currently on a anticoagulant.

Well, you should find gallbladder...MRI should show it for sure. Ask if MRCP (MRI investigation of biliary tree) would be appropriate in your case.
