One Food

My son will be 3 this December.  He had a frenulectomy November 2007.  When he first started baby foods he ate any baby food we gave him.  Since he was born he has had 8 stomach viruses.  These are not viruses that last 24 to 48 hours either, when he gets sick he is out for days!  He had diffuculty swallowing before he had his surgery and would gag if he was given most table foods.  Now that is has been almost a year he still does not eat.  The only thing he wants is stage 2 turkey and rice.  He won't even go to stage 3 it's too chunky.  I know he is missing out on vitamins.  He has been in "eating" therapy since March 28th and nothing has changed.  They first thought it was a texture problem but he will eat cheerios when I refuse to give him turkey and rice for breakfast.  I have tried to take the turkey and rice away at lunch too.  I offer him chicken nuggets and a variety of other foods but he won't even touch the other foods.  Is this just from a stubborn child or could there be something else wrong?  He went from eating everything to only eating one thing!  He is a great child, he listens well and follows directions like a 4 year old.  His speech greatly improved after the surgery but his eating has not changed.

Is he drinking fluids? Suggest Pedisure instead of milk so he is getting additional calories, nutrients, and protein. Engage him in helping you with cooking food in the kitchen. Children love to cook. Have him help you with preparing foods and setting the table. Help him make milkshakes (ice cream, fresh fruit or frozen fruit, milk) or yogurt smoothies (yogurt, fresh fruit, and frozen fruit) and he will additional vitamins and minerals. Hopefully this will increase his interest in food. The most important thing is to relax. Slowly introduce new foods, and if he does not want it, do not make a fuss over it. Let it go and enjoy your meal. Try again in a few weeks. Do not be discouraged it takes 10 times to introduce a new food to a child before they will accept it. He has been through a lot with his surgery and not able to swallow. As long as he is drinking Pedisure 3 times a day and having milkshakes he will be getting the needed nutrients he needs to grow.
