Feeding strained meats

by ZoesMommy, Jun 17, 2008 07:54AM
My friend told me that her pediatrician said it is not recommended to begin feeding strained meats by themselves to infants under 9 months old. She said that feeding them foods such a Vegetables and chicken, as long as the vegetables comes before the meats, it is okay.

She said her pediatrician told her that a baby under 9 months old cannot physically digest meats properly and it can cause liver or kidney damage.

Is this true?

There are different thoughts on when to start feeding infants baby food. Some follow the breast feeding model where the child does not really eat any food, except breast milk or infant formula until about 9-10 months old. Then baby food is slowly introduced, cereal, vegetables, meat, fruits. Others feel a child should start eating baby food at about 3 months old, cereal, fruits, vegetables, and meats. The only foods restricted the first year are dairy products (milk, yogurt), wheat products, and orange juice due to help prevent allergies.

But can meats fed earlier than 9 months old really cause liver and kidney damage like my friend's pediatrician says?

Hi,
Meats fed earlier do not cause any knid of liver or kidney damages.
I would just like to brief you about what kind of pattern of baby feeding is done traditionally amd ideally in India.
At birth till about 4 mnths-- exclusive breast feeding- but its not feasible for a working mom so formula milk are started sooner.
After 4 mnths age--start with foods like water formed after cooking rice/pulses(its very nutritious),vegetable soups, juices ets.
After 7-9 mnths a little more thicker consistency foods like fresh fruit pulps or any other foods not too spicy and is made into puply/pasty consistency.meats can also be started at this stage.
by the age of 1 and half year the baby can eat all the food that an adult does.
All this while its always emphasized to continue breast feeding as long as possible(breast milk contains a huge percentage of all the vital nutrition required per day and so if you have missed any of the nutrition through any of your formula foods/cooked foods it can always be compensated in breast milk)
It is true that many foods like dairy products etc can cause allergies but it does not happen in all children. its better to start those product(at least the ones like  milk.. juice etc can rather be given a freshly extracted so as to avoid giving the preservatives of outside to baby)
i would also suggest that give your children healthy food and not the foods that may promote obesity in future.
